IUI vs. IVF: Understanding Your Options

Posted on January 22nd, 2024

The new year is a good opportunity to begin fertility treatment and selecting the proper assisted reproductive technology (ART) technique is no simple choice. The two leading options – intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) – are safe and proven effective at helping many people become parents, but not all may benefit from each treatment. Knowing more about IUI and IVF, including their processes and finances, can help you make an informed decision when discussing your options with your fertility specialist.

Note: Before initiating any fertility treatment, patients must first have comprehensive fertility evaluations, including medical and family histories, blood tests, physical exams, and diagnostic infertility tests.

Intrauterine Insemination: Helping Achieve Fertilization

A simple, efficient, convenient means to become pregnant, IUI, or artificial insemination, is often aspiring parents’ first line of treatment. IUI involves sperm, provided by a partner or donor, being placed in a woman’s uterus during ovulation. With IUI, high-quality sperm travel less time and distance, making it more likely they complete the journey to the fallopian tubes and eggs, improving fertilization chances.

IUI may be fruitful for individuals and couples with health issues affecting sperm count or quality, ovulation issues, cervical conditions, genetic conditions, or unexplained infertility. IUI may not be advised for people with concerns affecting fallopian tubes or sperm function.

In Vitro Fertilization: One Clinical Process, High Success Rates

IVF involves combining healthy, mature eggs and sperm in a laboratory, with the resulting embryos being implanted into the recipient’s uterus. Reproductive endocrinologists may suggest IVF for individuals or couples with specific health concerns, such as:

  • Diminished ovarian reserve
  • Fertility issues involving the uterus or ovulation
  • A lack of fallopian tubes or untreatable tubal disease
  • Male factor infertility, like low sperm count
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Unexplained infertility

IUI and IVF: Potential Eligibility and Success Rates

With IUI, certain factors, like your age, infertility causes, and fertility drug use, may cause lower pregnancy rates overall. The most effective treatment, IVF yields more than 8 million births worldwide. Healthy women under 35 years old may achieve pregnancy rates over 50%. IVF success may depend on a woman’s age when using her eggs, previous IVF outcomes, and transferred embryos’ number and quality.

IUI and IVF: Financial Considerations

As a less advanced procedure, a single IUI cycle costs less than a single IVF cycle. However, IUI also doesn’t have nearly as high of a success rate as IVF, so you may undergo many IUI cycles and still not conceive. Although IVF costs more, depending on your circumstances, it may make more sense to focus your budgeting primarily on IVF.

While the costs of IVF may seem daunting, there are several ways to make it more affordable. For example, at Aspire Houston Fertility Institute, we accept various insurance plans (coverage must be confirmed with the insurance provider); we also offer IVF financial assurance plans, as well as financing options. Lastly, if you’re at a high risk of needing multiple IVF cycles, we also offer multi-cycle plans through Bundl.
